Franklin at Siegel

Franklin scored 17 unanswered points in the first quarter, spread evenly between offense, defense and special teams, on the way to a 34-15 victory over Siegel on the road to open the 2019 campaign. It was all Rebels the first quarter, beginning with Wyatt Harnage's 30-yard touchdown scamper after Journey Keen forced an early fumble. New quarterback Guy Lipscomb notched the first of his three scores not long after on an 11-yard run, and Ian Johnson capped the first 12-minute period of the year with a 25-yard field goal. Lipscomb, who finished the night with 89 yards on the ground and another 50 in the air, took over as the signal caller when Josh Nichols was moved to receiver. Franklin coach Donnie Webb praised the switch after the contest.
"We are a WE team not a ME team this year which is really exciting," Webb said. "The kids are just fun to coach. Josh and Guy really stepped up tonight in roles they have not been in before and they will be able to grow as the season goes on." The Rebels Grayson Bruce led all rushers with 107 yards on 17 carries. The Stars top ball carrier, Julian Walton, could garner only 49 yards on the ground. "The offensive line stepped up big," Lipscomb said after the game. "They helped us to be able to run the ball the way we did. The defense gets all the credit for this one for sure. Lipscomb added a 21-yard scoring run in the third and Johnson tacked on a 32-yard field goal before Lipscomb closed out the visitors. Lipscomb's final rushing touchdown came early in the fourth quarter as he ran up the middle for seven yards with just over seven and-a-half minutes left in the game. Harnage, who opened the show with the scoop-and-score, was quick to share the glory of victory. "It was a great team win," he said. "We really came together, worked as a whole team not just individuals and got the job done." Franklin takes on another Rutherford County school next week at Howard Gamble Stadium as they will host Riverdale.
